Role: Sports Commissioner – Ref & Coach

Job Type: Full Time



The ideal candidate works well in a team environment, isn’t afraid to ask for help and is willing to tackle any job that comes their way. Volo City is looking for someone who is:

This role is for you if you are passionate about organized sports and interested in playing in recreational leagues and events. Schedules are flexible and subject to change based on the season. Your responsibilities will include but will not be limited to:


League Operations:

  • On-field support including refereeing 20 games per week
  • Youth program support – coach 3-5 days per week
  • Player, family & volunteer communication – sending all emails for assigned leagues
  • Checking and updating scores for all leagues within assigned sport
  • Maintain equipment for assigned sports including ordering replacements, noting damages, and reporting to the market’s equipment lead
  • Maintain fields as needed based on weather, location, and sport-specific requirements
  • Set up & take down fields and gather up equipment


Youth Coach

  • Serve as direct contact with the kids and families to assure that they are having a safe and fun experience
  • Plan practice drills using provided resources and curriculum
  • Understand & lead both kids and other coaches through program drills in a FUN and engaging way
  • Consistently move on from one drill to the next as to keep the players engages
  • Player evaluations – week 1 (make trades if necessary to create fair teams), mid-season, & season end
  • Provide guidance to volunteers if there are questions about drills/ roles
  • Provide support to volunteers if any issues arise with parents, players or venues
  • Report any player, parent, ref, coach issues to site lead


Talent Development:

  • Leading host & volunteer training in your market
  • Recruiting, mentoring, and ensuring quality staff and product – includes reviewing league audits & volunteer/parent surveys


Customer Service:

  • Resolve any problems that players might face with accuracy and efficiency
  • Anticipate and provide proactive solutions to prevent problems from arising in the future


Expand Impact through Marketing, Community Outreach, Partnerships & Events

  • Increase brand awareness for Volo through support of community events such as but not limited to tabling at community events, schools, festivals, etc.
  • Outreach event lead & attendance as needed
  • Facilitate partnerships with community organizations and neighborhoods



  • BA or BS degree; 1-2 years of experience ideally refereeing or coaching sports
  • Ability to work nights and weekends (most hours will be on the field and/or court with 3-4 hours of in-office support. This will not fall into a general work-week and hours will typically fall Sunday-Thursday between 12:00pm – 10:00pm)
  • Can marshal resources effectively and comfortably navigate a fast-paced, ever changing environment with minimal supervision
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Dynamic personality interested in working in, and contributing to, a fun and active sporting environment
