  • *Minimum players for a full dodgeball team depends on the type of league.
    • Party Dodgeball – 13 player min for team
    • Traditional – 9 player min for team
  • If you do not meet the minimum, your team will be merged with free agents.
  • A Captain must create a team and all the team members must “join” the team. The Captain can pay for everyone or you can split up the fee among team members.

    What can I expect at a Volo Dodgeball League?

    A premier, FUN experience! Plan to arrive at the gym 10-15 minutes before game time to meet up with your teammates and get ready to play in your Volo dodgeball league. Make sure you pencil us in for at least 30-35 minutes. Once your game ends, the night is just beginning. Head to your sponsor bar for drink specials and a chance to meet everyone in your league.

    How competitive are the dodgeball leagues?

    We’re all about being social here at Volo! While we offer some competitive traditional dodgeball leagues, those are specifically labeled as such, and everything else is all about being social. We also offer a variety of divisions including A Division and B Division – A Division is slightly more competitive while B Division is slightly less. Check each league for specific information on the Baltimore dodgeball page or shoot us an email if you have questions!

    How many people do I need for a full dodgeball team?

    All teams are required to have a minimum of 8 players for traditional dodgeball or 12 players for party dodgeball. If you and your crew don’t have a full roster, we’ll merge you with another small group. FYI – merged teams generally have extra players to protect against forfeits. If you’d like to make sure you have a larger or smaller team, you can register as a prepaid team which allows you determine the amount of players on your team.

    How much does it cost to join Volo Dodgeball?

    You can expect your Volo doftball league to be anywhere from $55-$75 per player for the entire season. Registration fees are dependent on location and day of the week, so be sure to check the league details carefully. After you sign up, everything else is taken care of for you. Your registration includes league shirt, referees, venue costs, insurance, equipment, prizes, league management and so much more!

    What are the Volo Dodgeball Gender Requirements?

    When signing up your dodgeball team, be aware that each team can have a maximum of 6 players for traditional dodgeball on the court at a time and 10 players for party dodgeball on the court at a time. You must have a minimum of 1 female to play traditional and 3 females to play party.

    BASIC TRADITIONAL RULES

    6 v 6

    • Maximum 6 players, 2 females to play
    • Minimum 4 players, 1 female to play
    • Boundaries are court specific
    • Dodgeball wins are worth 2 points, Flip Cup wins are worth 1 point

    *Playoff seating is based on TOTAL POINTS from the season*

    Game Play:

    • Matches are 30 minutes:
      • Teams switch sides after 15 minutes of play
      • Play as many games as possible – the team with the most wins will be declared winner
    • 6 foam balls will be used
    • A staff member is there to keep score and time
      • They can make tough calls IF NECESSARY but we go by the HONOR SYSTEM!
    • If you are hit in the head, you are out
      • If the ref feels that someone is intentionally headhunting, they will be asked to sit out.
    • If you get out, you CAN return to the game if someone on your team catches the ball:
      • You MUST return in the order you get out
    • A player is OUT if you cross the center line
    • A player is OUT if the ball is knocked out of your hand by an opponent’s throw
    • If a player is hit – they are OUT (no matter if a teammate catches that ball)
    • NO Blocking:
      • If the opponent’s ball hits off the ball in your hand – you are OUT
      • If the opponent’s ball hits off the ball in your hand and then hits another player, the player that was hit is SAFE – it becomes a dead ball
    • Players can hold 2 balls max. at a time and can ONLY hold balls for 5 SECONDS:
      • Players who fail to comply will be warned by the ref and called out if issue persists
    • NO FIGHTING OVER BALLS (if seen, ref may eliminate both players)
    • *If you make a basket your entire team returns to the game*

    *Teams without the minimum players will forfeit after 10 minutes from their designated start time*

    **All teams make the playoffs at the end of the season (unless you forfeit 2x)**

    • At start of game, when retrieving balls you must go back to your start wall and touch before throwing the ball

      • Play as many games as possible – the team with the most wins will be declared winner
    • 10 foam balls used
      • 7 regular sized balls
      • 3 small balls which can ONLY be used by females
    • A staff member is there to keep score and time
      • They can make tough calls IF NECESSARY but we go by the HONOR SYSTEM!
    • If you are hit in the head, you are out
      • If the ref feels that someone is intentionally headhunting, they will be asked to sit out.
    • A player is OUT if you cross the Throwing line
      • Ref MAY change the throwing line based on specific game and time playing each game
    • If a player is hit – they are OUT (no matter if a teammate catches that ball after it hits the 1st person)
      • Player MUST raise hand when they are out
    • If a ball hits a player, the ball is DEAD and can not get anyone else out and a different person catching the ball does not result in an out.
    • If the ball THEN hits another player, that player is NOT out nor can they catch the ball
    • If you get hit by the ball and catch it before it hits the ground without it touching anyone else, equipment or floor that is a catch.
    • NO Blocking (the ball is an extension of you) This makes everyone not hold on to the balls and creates more action and fun.
      • If the opponent’s ball hits off the ball in your hand – you are OUT
      • If the opponent’s ball hits off the ball in your hand and then hits another player, the player that was hit is SAFE – it becomes a dead ball
    • Players can hold 2 balls max. at a time and can ONLY hold balls for 5 SECONDS at most
      • Players who fail to comply may be warned by the ref and called out if issue persists
    • DEPENDING ON THE GYM- *If you make a basket your entire team returns to the game* (EXCEPT 4 quadrant and survivor)

    Game Variations:

      • Greek
    • Re-entry: NO
      • Played like normal dodgeball EXCEPT:
        • When you are out, you go to the baseline of the OPPOSING team (you stay on the baseline until the game is over even if there is a catch)
        • Players on the baseline MUST be TOUCHING the wall at all times (with hand or foot)
        • Run the baseline collecting and throwing balls at the opponent
      • Traditional (most common)
    • Re-entry: YES
        • Once you are hit out you go to the sideline
          • Player waits in the order for someone on their team to catch the ball so they can return to play
          • Once everyone on your team is OUT, the game is finished
      • 4 Quadrant
        • Re-entry: NO
        • Follows same rules for OUTS as normal dodgeball
        • Played on a court divided into 4 equal zones (quadrants) with 2 teams (both teams split in half – same team is diagonal from each other)
        • The object of the game is to eliminate EVERYBODY in another quadrant
          • Once EVERYONE in a quadrant is eliminated, this quadrant becomes a FREE QUADRANT – ANY player from ANY team is allowed to go into this quadrant to gather/throw or get hit
      • Pinball
    • Re-entry: YES
        • Played like normal dodgeball EXCEPT:
          • Each team has 3 plastic bowling pins at the back center of their side of the court (evenly spaced on the last line before the wall)
          • The game ends when all of a team’s players are eliminated OR (more often) when all of a team’s pins are knocked over
          • The balls may be used to hit players or hit pins
      • Prison Ball
    • Re-entry: YES (if you catch the ball in prison ONLY)
          • Played like normal dodgeball EXCEPT:
          • When a player is hit, they are put in the defined area (prison) behind the opposing team
          • To get OUT of prison, you must catch a ball thrown by your teammate (in the air – cannot hit anything or bounce before)
          • A player in prison (prisoner) may NOT eliminate anyone from the opposing team
          • Prisoners remain behind the opposing team (in prison) until the game is over
      • Doctor Dodge
    • Re-entry: YES (only by doctor)
    • *NEW, No one can shield or intentionally stand in front of DR or will be called permanently out of that game
        • Each team declares a leader (doctor) who tries to AVOID getting hit
        • When players are hit, they sit on the ground and wait for their team’s doctor to come and save them
          • Seated players may NOT intentionally interfere with game play
          • Live players may NOT hide behind sitting players (or use them as a shield)
        • When the doctor saves the sitting players, they can get up and resume play
        • The game ends when one team is entirely eliminated OR when the doctor gets out (game is over if doctor is hit)
      • Survivor
    • Re-entry: NO
      • Specific boundaries used
      • 2 balls are used
      • At the beginning of the game, ref throws the balls to initiate game play
      • Players will then pick up the balls – they are ONLY permitted to walk 3 steps max. from the spot they picked up the ball, then throw the ball
      • Players WITHOUT the ball are permitted to run as they please
      • If a player is hit, they are out for the rest of the game
      • If a player catches the ball, the thrower is out (even if they are on the same team)
      • Once the players are reduced to a low number, they may be permitted to take more steps with the ball (at the ref’s discretion)
      • The game ends ONLY when 1 person if left standing (or only people from 1 team)

    *Teams without the minimum players will forfeit after 10 minutes from their designated start time

    **All teams make the playoffs at the end of the season (unless you forfeit 2x)**

Basics

Traditional Dodgeball

  • 6v6 (no more than 4 males, at least 2 females)
  • Team Size: 8 to 10 players
  • Each match has a 30 minute time limit, so you play as many games as time allows
  • Get players out by hitting them (anywhere except the head) with a thrown ball or by knocking a ball out of their hands
  • Catch a thrown ball to get a player out ..And get a teammate back in!
  • Go the bar for our MANDATORY Flip Cup League, socializing and a rowdy ole time.

Party Dodgeball

  • 10 v 10 (no more than 6 males, at least 4 females)
  •  Team Size: 13 – 25 people
  • Min 6 people to play (1 female)
  • Foam Balls
  • Dodgeball 2 Points – For Wins
  • Flip Cup 1 Point – For Wins
  • Play as many games in 35 mins
